CBD, otherwise known as cannabidiol, comes from the hemp plant. It contains only trace elements of THC and so does not have the same psychoactive effects that would come from smoking cannabis. 

For this reason, CBD products, including CBD oil, are now legally sold both online and in stores across Ireland. However, for it to be completely legal in Ireland, CBD must have THC levels in line with EFSA guidelines and be extracted by the method of cold-pressing.

Benefits of CBD Oil

CBD oil has become increasingly popular in Ireland in recent years thanks to claims of its numerous therapeutic properties. Many patients have claimed benefits from using CBD oil for conditions such as; 

• chronic pain 
• epilepsy
• insomnia
• anxiety 

However, CBD is yet to be authorised as a medicinal product by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) in Ireland.

Are there levels of CBD that would be considered unsafe?

As CBD falls under the EU’s ‘Novel Food Regulation’, The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has previously advised on acute reference dosage. A novel food is one which was not previously available on the EU market before 15th May 1997 (to a significant degree).

In 2015, for THC, the EFSA derived an acute reference dose of 0.001mg/kg body weight (1µg/kg body weight).

With this in mind, and taking an 80kg person as an example, this acute reference dose means that consumption of less than 0.08mg (80µg) of THC is unlikely to have an adverse effect on that person.
